Abstract

In this essay we offer an international-level analysis of the role, associated problematics, and job perspectives of postdoctoral researchers in science. Despite the fact that postdoctoral training originated as an opportunity to strengthen the abilities of recently graduated PhDs, a consistent and systematic definition of this position is lacking. Here we analyze the current situation of postdocs in different countries, and offer some considerations and recommendations. In general, postdocs are highly qualified and represent one of the most productive groups in academia. Unfortunately, today obtaining employment opportunities in academia represents a challenge, whose difficulty increases exponentially. Moreover, postdoctoral positions can become long impasse phases instead of being stepping stones to satisfactory appointments. Economic conditions, financial crises, and the indifference and corruption of policy makers seem to represent the most critical problems affecting postdoctoral careers worldwide.
