LEA: web app to stimulate literacy in children with autism

Abstract

Autism is a neurobiological disorder that is observed in early infancy, with displays that include impairments in communication and social interaction as well as restrictive interests and repetitive actions that prevent child integration. The traditional teaching procedures are difficult for their learning, but we know that they show a high affinity for electronic devices. Previously we showed that virtual stimulation improves motor skills, social integration and cognition. Now we developed a web app to stimulate literacy in autism. Methods: for app development we used the Agile XP Methodology; for literacy learning, we used a global analytical procedure. Results: LEA was created, a web app enriched with multimedia elements to improve literacy in children with autism. Conclusions: The LEA app is appropriated for the cognitive development of kids with autism, suggesting that the use of technological tools for teaching is a field of opportunities that deserves further efforts.
