Arithmetic skills in university students
Keywords:
arithmetic, education, Mexico, neurosciences, university studentsAbstract
This article is a reflection on the current state of arithmetic skills that the university students count on during their academic formation, besides the importance of addressing these issues through neurosciences in interaction with the educational field, and the participation of neural circuits of parietal, prefrontal, temporal and cingulate cortex areas in numerical management. Results of the National Higher Education Placement Test (EXANI-II) and the National Postgraduate Placement Test (EXANI-III) in Mexico, from 2014 to 2016, showed important deficiencies in the mathematical thinking area. It is important to carry out research on numerical processing in mexican students to have data from our population from different disciplines, and to increase knowledge of the biological, social and psychological processes that underlie such learning and, in this way, to generate strategies to promote mathematical knowledge and correct the difficulties faced by students of different educational levels.
